It is not an official function of South Carolina Citizens for Life, but I can assure you that praying is the single most powerful weapon we have against abortion. In last month's letter, we told you about Kindra, a young woman who angrily approached our prayer group demanding to know why we were praying. We patiently listened to her litany of pro-abortion propaganda and then asked her if she wanted to join us in prayer. After speaking to her about God's healing love, Kindra's face softened and she asked us to pray for her. Our prayers continue to have an effect at Planned Parenthood. We believe our prayer presence made a difference in Kindra's life - but we also believe our prayers enraged the Satanic forces that feed their bloodlust at abortion businesses. Two weeks later, on Saturday, July 28, our prayer group met at the usual time in the parking lot Planned Parenthood shares with many other businesses in Middleburg Plaza on Forest Drive in Columbia. During our prayers, a woman wearing a medical-style uniform stepped out of the front door of Planned Parenthood and began yelling, "You're on private property. If you don't leave in two minutes I'm calling the police." There were no signs indicating "private property" and the parking lot is certainly open to public traffic, so we continued our prayers. Within five minutes three City of Columbia squad cars and four officers careened into the parking lot. "What's going on," an officer asked. "We're praying," I replied. The officer looked genuinely confused, but told us we had to get out of the parking lot because it is "private property." We asked him who owns the property, and he said he didn't know. The point, he said, was that we had been "asked" to leave. We now pray at the entrance to the parking lot where we actually have greater visibility. My dear friends, we need your prayers. Unborn child-killing centers in South Carolina have been reduced from 14 to three. South Carolina Citizens for Life has worked effectively at the State House for laws that closed most of the death chambers. Because of our persistent, effective efforts, abortions have declined by 53% in our state - far greater than the national decline of 17%. Yet more than 6,000 unborn children die in these three centers every year. This slaughter of innocents must stop. Every official action of SCCL - whether at the State House, or the State Fair - must be grounded in prayer to be effective. I find it interesting that the most intense spiritual attack is launched against our prayers. We are always mindful that any success we have comes from God through your prayers and your prayerful support. - Holly Gatling

                                                                            One Life at a Time

Something totally wonderful happened this year at the State Fair. Our office coordinator, Ila Woodwyk, R.N., was staffing our booth when a couple approached the table where we display medically accurate, beautiful models of fetal development. The young woman introduced herself to Ila and said she spoke with her last year at the Fair. She said, Last year I told you I was pregnant. What I didn t tell you was I had an abortion scheduled for the next day. Because of what you said and the literature you gave us, you convinced us that the baby was a real, living baby inside of me. I went home, cancelled the abortion, and here we are to show you our baby. She reached around and took the baby from its grandmother and handed the child to Ila. Needless to say, Ila was overwhelmed with emotion, and is still floating on clouds of happiness. This is why we are at the State Fair every year and have been since 1974. This is why we give out thousands of brochures. We know hearts are changed and lives are saved. It s not just the people who receive our brochures and 12-week baby models. The brochures go home where others also see them. Friends give them to friends. Teenagers bring them to school and church. Teachers and school nurses pick up our literature. The pro-life message spreads far and wide. Our work at the State Fair is like the proverbial pebble cast in a pond. The ripples spread and spread and we never know how far they reach until someone comes back the next year to show us the baby whose life we saved. You, our faithful supporters, share in the saving of this one child s life and thousands more about whom you will not know until eternity. Without you, South Carolina Citizens for Life could not exist. We cannot thank you enough!

SCCL's Aimee Green saves baby, conceived in rape, from abortion

By Holly Gatling

A few years ago, the SCCL booth at the State Fair received a glorious blessing. On Saturday, Oct. 14, a family from Sumter with a baby in a stroller approached our booth. The man, Mr. Jimmy Foisey, grinned at us and asked, "Were y'all the organization on the radio last January?" I knew he was speaking of the Kevin Cohen Afternoon Drive Show on which Aimee Green, the SCCL education director, had debated the abortion issue with the director of Planned Parenthood. "Yes we were," I replied. Mr. Foisey described how he had called the show extremely upset because his 14-year-old daughter had been raped and had become pregnant. She was scheduled for an abortion that week.

Aimee handled the call with professional skill. She sympathized with Mr. Foisey in his anger regarding the sexual assault of his young daughter. Then Aimee explained that this terrible violent crime wasn't the baby's fault. A few minutes later a woman caller -- who turned out to be SCCL volunteer Barbara Johnson - pointed out that regardless of the circumstances of this baby's conception, the baby was Mr. Foisey's grandchild and nothing could change that fact. Now, 10 months, later a radiant Jimmy Foisey stood at the SCCL Fair Booth and told us: "Here's the baby. Come look at her. Her name is Autumn Nicole."

As I peered into the stroller, I was overwhelmed by the sight of this precious, beautiful little four-week old girl. She slept so peacefully, oblivious to the extraordinary attention she was receiving. Back at the SCCL office a few days later, an e-mail arrived for Aimee from Mr. Foisey. Although the Foisey's have not yet met her in person , Mr. Foisey said he thinks of Aimee every time he looks at his beautiful grandchild, Autumn.

SCCL office in former abortion center

COLUMBIA, SC In 2001, South Carolina Citizens for Life moved its headquarters into a former abortion facility once owned by the state s most notorious abortionist. We will be sharing building space with Bethany Christian Adoption Services and doing redemptive, life-saving work in a building where thousands of babies once died, said Holly Gatling, SCCL executive director.

The moving opportunity occurred when SCCL lost its lease in the building it has occupied for nine years. Another tenant offered more than twice the rent we pay and we couldn t possibly match the offer, Gatling said. Losing our office space was a crisis, but God presented us with an unprecedented opportunity. The new space is better, our rent is the same, and we are closer to the State Capitol.

Six years ago when the state s most notorious abortionist, Jesse Floyd, died in an automobile accident, his heirs were unable to sell the abortion facility on Barnwell Street. The property went on the block for taxes. At that point a Christian businessman, Dennis Yeo, bought the building and began extensive renovations. The place was an unbelievable dump. Worse than a dump, said Gatling who saw the property several times while it was up for sale.

We call Jesse Floyd South Carolina s most notorious abortionist for good reason. He bragged about the number of babies he killed. His own employees went to the news media to complain about filthy, unsanitary conditions in his office, Gatling said. They described how he ground up the bodies of aborted children in the sink disposal. When he died there were seven lawsuits pending against him.

After a local Charleston television station aired a three-part exposé of the employees allegations, Sen. Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, introduced the Abortion Clinic Regulation Act. Despite massive efforts by the abortion industry to keep the bill from passing and being enforced, the courts ruled this year that South Carolina s abortion clinic regulations are constitutional. We are the first state in the nation with court-approved abortion clinic regulations, Gatling said.

After extensive renovation and remodeling of the upper level of the split-level building, South Carolina Citizens for Life now will occupy a freshly renovated suite of offices in the lower level.

The new address is 1411 Barnwell St. Suite 3, Columbia, SC 29201. The phone number, 803.252.LIFE (5433), will remain the same.

South Carolina Citizens for Life is the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee. SCCL is best known for the annual Stand Up for Life March and Rally and for our lobbying work with the State Legislature, Gatling said. That is why it is wonderful that our new office is closer to the State Capitol.

The number of abortions in South Carolina has declined by 47 percent in the past 12 years. This dramatic drop correlates with the passage of seven life-protecting bills by the General Assembly, Gatling said. SCCL has successfully lobbied for passage of the Parental Consent Act of 1990, the Woman s Right to Know Act and the Abortion Clinic Regulation Act of 1994; the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 1997; the Physician-Assisted Suicide Ban Act of 1998; the Safe Haven for Abandoned Newborns Act of 2000; and the Choose Life License Plate Act of 2001.

The generous support of pro-life people makes it possible now to save babies in a building that was once a death camp for the unborn, Gatling said. We are grateful to God and our supporters whose sacrificial giving makes this possible.
